Our story
The box says Since 1975. The recipe inside it has been the same one ever since.
The original recipe
Little Christo's has been making pizzeria pizza in Charlottetown since 1975. The box calls it Our Secret Recipe, and the kitchen still works from that same recipe today.
The dough, the pizza sauce and the donair sauce are made in house.
The frozen years
In the 1990s Little Christo's grew from a small restaurant into a major frozen pizza business, competing with Kraft and McCain in the freezer section. The company also laid claim to a first: the dinner-size frozen pizza.
That claim is theirs to make, and the frozen chapter eventually closed. What mattered to Charlottetown is what came next.
Back on University Avenue
In 2007 the Little Christo's name and the original recipe were bought, and the pizzeria reopened on University Avenue, right next to Smitty's. No frozen pizza this time. Just the original recipe, made in house, in a small shop with a red wall and a checker border around the menu board.
The frozen years and the 2007 reopening were reported by CBC News at the time.
Today
Seven days a week the shop does dine in, takeout, delivery and timed pre-orders. The garlic fingers with homemade donair sauce have a following of their own, and the deals on the printed menu are the ones regulars order by number.
Lunch means a slice and a pop between 11:30 and 1:30. Sunday to Tuesday means the BOGO from 4 to close. Some things do not need changing.
